As a part of ēnergiQ, the must-attend event for the energy transition held in Montréal from February 3 to 5, 2026, a landmark announcement for the future of clean energy in Canada was made before key players in the ecosystem.

On this occasion, Claude Guay, Member of Parliament for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced, alongside Member of Parliament Élisabeth Brière andAlexandre Paris, CEO of ORPC Canada, a $4-million investment from the Government of Canada to deploy the RivGen system— a leading-edge hydrokinetic technology developed by ORPC Canada— in the St. Lawrence River.

A First in an Urban Setting

This investment, made under the Programme d’innovation énergétique, marks the first installation of the RivGen system on an urban scale. The project aims to harness the natural power of river currents to produce clean, reliable and predictable energy, without a dam or any interruption to the river's other uses.

This installation will serve as a model project for the future deployment of the technology across the country — from coast to coast — including remote regions and the Far North, where access to sustainable energy remains a major challenge.

A Technology with Strong Potential for Regions and Industry

RivGen technology paves the way for energy solutions adapted to a variety of contexts: remote communities, industrial activities, mining sites or critical infrastructure. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, it helps make electricity production cleaner, more resilient and more sustainable, while supporting local economic development.

A Clear Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

This announcement highlights the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in accelerating innovation and advancing the country's climate ambitions. It directly supports Canada's goal of achieving a carbon-neutral electricity grid by 2050, by relying on Canadian technology solutions with strong deployment potential.

By hosting this major announcement as part of its program, ēnergiQ reaffirms its role as a strategic platform for the discussions, partnerships and decisions shaping the energy future of Québec and Canada.
