The world's population consumes the equivalent of the resources produced by 1.7 Earths every year. This linear model, based on extracting natural resources and on the production, distribution, consumption and disposal of goods as waste, is no longer sustainable. Indeed, many essential resources exist in limited quantities and do not renew fast enough to sustain the pace of economic growth.

This is why the sectoral industrial research groups (RSRI) representing the bio-based economy (CRIBIQ), metal transformation (CRITM), aluminum (CQRDA), advanced materials (PRIMA Québec), and the electric industry, transportation electrification and smart transportation (InnovÉÉ) sectors have joined forces to launch the Programme de soutien aux innovations industrielles pour la transition vers une économie circulaire (SI2TEC).

This funding program, intended for Québec SMEs, aims to foster the emergence of innovative collaborative projects through one of the key strategies of the so-called circular economy: industrial symbiosis..

  • The SI2TEC program aims to:

    • Fund innovative projects that demonstrate economic circularity while optimising the ecological transition (waste reduction, GHG reduction, ecodesign, carbon neutrality, etc.)
    • Foster networking and synergies between different stakeholders in a strategic sector
    • Support the optimal use of resources at every stage of the life cycle
    • Encourage businesses and organisations to reduce their environmental impact.
  • Projects resulting from research and development work;
  • Innovation projects with a minimum technology readiness level of 6 (TRL): the project should have reached the prototyping/pilot-scale/real-world implementation stage;
  • Projects proposing one or more solutions to ecological transition challenges in Québec within the context of the circular economy;
  • Projects involving at least two eligible entities, including, mandatorily, an SME meeting the criteria mentioned above;
  • Project duration: 24 months.
